SHORT TRIP TO DENMARK

History

In 2017 we already visited Denmark for a brief period during a 5 day road trip with the family. After a night in Hamburg, we arrived in the afternoon in Aalborg where we stayed for a few days before visiting Copenhagen and returning home.

This year, we decided to head back for another road trip of 8 days with the family that starts in one of Europe’s most charismatic capitals: Copenhagen.

After a trip of almost 1100 km we arrived in our hotel nearby a metro station which makes a city trip very convenient. On the short period we managed to see and take nice pictures of Nyhavn, the Opera House, The Royal Library (also dubbed the Black Diamond) that might be suited for the portfolio after post-processing.

We also checked out locations like Amalienborg Palace, Frederiks Kirke, the 17th century fortress Kastellet, the Little Mermaid (and yes, she is little) among others. To keep everyone happy, a quick visit to the more commercial streets was made just before closing hours. As I really love ice cream, I also selected Østerberg Ice Cream as a ‘must visit’ place to taste their ice cream. And yes, their ice cream is delicious.

After the short city trip we stayed in B&Bs in Sønder Omme, Lemvig and near in a cosy cabin on a camping site just next to the beach Fjerritslev . All with a stay of max 2 nights in each location to give us the opportunity to visit most of the west coast of the country.

We already knew from our previous trip that some beaches are accessible by car. We received this tip from a kind receptionist during our stay in Aalborg in 2017. That same day we went to Blokhus for this experience, followed by a walk in the dunes and the sunset near Rubjerg Knude lighthouse to start with.

We now did the same but at Lakolk beach, on the island Rømø, after the visit of Ribe, one of the oldest towns in Denmark in combination of a visit to the lighthouse Blåvandshuk Fyr, Blåvand.

During our excursion on the west coast we visited De gamle fiskerhytter, some old houses of fisherman which are freely accessible, and Nymindegab beach with beautiful dunes and local ponds with wildlife. Follow the 181 through Thy National park all the way to Hanstholm and behold its beautiful surroundings.

A nice place to visit is the Kunsthal Regelbau 411, near the Oddesundbridge', that is located in old WWII bunkers. The audio visual exhibition “Made to break” from Julie Østengaard took place at that moment and was very nice to see. Kunsthal Regelbau 411 changes the exhibitions from time to time with new work.

And just two minutes away you have the Grisetå Odde Fyr, a small classic lighthouse, with red and white striping.

From Fjerritslev we made a trip to Skagen, which is a port town at the north end of Denmark’s Jutland peninsula, and to the northernmost point of Denmark, Grenen. This is where the North Sea and the Baltic Sea merge into each other. The Skagen Gray Lighthouse gives a nice view of the area from a height of 46 meters. On the way back, we stopped at the Råbjerg Mile, a high sand dune covering 2 square km, to hike to the top for a long-range view. We closed our day with a sunset at the beach of Blokhus.

On the last day, already heading back, we made a stop at the Jelling Mounds, Runic Stones and Church (a UNESCO site) and one of Vejle’s most exclusive residential buildings, Bølgen, which has won international awards. In 2017, construction was ongoing so our stop was limited to a snap shot. It was on my list so I carefully planned it heading home.

Unfortunately, I only had time to take two long exposure shots of almost 3 minutes due to rain showers - got very wet after the first shot running to the car - and three hungry passengers impatiently waiting in the car.

Got a few shots

As this is a family holiday, I could not spend much time on photography as usual but I had a few items on my bucket list. In other circumstances I would take some time to visit the site, explore it, find a good spot to make a great composition and shoot multiple photos. Now I just had the time to move to my preferred viewpoint that I figured out beforehand, get everything installed and make the shot.

But to be honest, I think it worked out fine. I got a few great shots that I like and can start working at. But of course, there is always a reason to head back and spend more time with the architectural projects of Denmark and magnificent landscapes.

So stay tuned and follow this site/blog to see more.

About Denmark

Denmark has a relative flat topography but there is plenty to see and to do. Long beaches, cliffs, small harbours, forests and various national parks which are very well suited for hikes. If you prefer a more cultural approach, there are lots of museums, galleries, castles, mansions and also abandoned WWII sites and bunkers to visit.
